Details

When we think of Japanese cuisine, our minds often wander to sushi, ramen, or tempura. While these dishes are undeniably delicious, they are just the tip of the culinary iceberg. For those seeking a deeper connection with Japan's rich cultural tapestry, we offer an extraordinary experience: a traditional Japanese lunch, lovingly prepared by a Japanese grandmother. This isn't just any meal; it's a heartfelt journey into the everyday life of Japanese families.

Grandmother

What's on the Menu?

The meal typically includes a variety of dishes that are staples in Japanese households. Here's a sneak peek at what you might enjoy:

- Gohan (Steamed Rice): The cornerstone of every Japanese meal, steamed rice is served as the main carbohydrate, providing a neutral base for the other flavorful dishes.

- Miso Soup: A comforting bowl of miso soup made with dashi (a broth made from kelp and bonito flakes) and enriched with tofu, seaweed, and seasonal vegetables.

- Nimono (Simmered Dish): A hearty dish featuring vegetables like daikon radish, carrots, and potatoes simmered in a savory broth with soy sauce, mirin, and sake.

- Tsukemono (Pickles): A variety of pickled vegetables that add a tangy crunch to the meal, balancing the flavors with their refreshing acidity.

- Grilled Fish: A simple, perfectly grilled piece of fish seasoned with salt, showcasing the natural flavors of the fresh seafood.

Traditional dish

After a satisfying meal, you'll transition to a hands-on art craft session. Using beautiful fabrics from traditional Japanese kimonos, you'll create your own unique keepsake. Whether it's a small accessory, a piece of artwork, or a practical item, this craft experience will leave you with a tangible memory of your time in Japan.

Craft

To give you a deeper insight into this unique experience, we sat down with the grandmother who will be your guide and mentor throughout this journey. Here’s what she had to say:

Q: Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?

"My name is Yasuko Saito. I have been cooking traditional Japanese dishes as a housewife for a long time.

I opened my own cafe, encouraged by my daughters, after my husband passed away".

Q: How many years have you been cooking traditional Japanese cuisine?

I've been cooking since I was a child, helping my family, so it's been over 70 years.

Q: What inspired you to start sharing traditional Japanese cuisine with travelers?

For me, meals have always been a time for family to gather and enjoy conversation. Now that my husband is gone, I want to welcome different people here and enjoy conversations together.

Q: How do the meals you prepare reflect the daily life and culture of Japanese people?

I strive to use ingredients that are in season as much as possible. Using seasonal ingredients allows people to directly experience the essence of that particular season. By feeling and tasting Japan's beautiful four seasons, I believe people can truly experience Japan itself.

Q: Why do you think it is important for visitors to experience traditional Japanese home cooking?

When visitors come to Japan, I want them to feel the true charm of the country. Tasting Japanese home cooking is something they can't experience at high-end restaurants. By experiencing the everyday life of Japan rather than just the famous dishes, I hope they can recall their time in Japan when they return to their daily lives in their own country.

Q: Can you explain the craft activities you conduct after meals?
We repurpose silk kimonos to create small accessories and other items. Kimonos are traditional Japanese garments, but nowadays they are often only worn on special occasions and frequently discarded. By transforming these traditional kimonos into accessories and clothing, we make them suitable for modern fashion.

Q: How did you learn this art, and what is its significance in Japanese culture?

Kimonos are traditional Japanese crafts recognized worldwide, but wearing them requires special skills and conditions. As a result, many are often discarded. By reusing kimonos, I hope to pass down the beauty of this tradition to future generations, allowing children and grandchildren to appreciate the cultural heritage of Japan in various forms.

Q: How do you feel about sharing Japanese culture with people from around the world?

Although I can't speak languages other than Japanese, I am very happy that what I have cultivated can be passed down and appreciated across different cultures and generations.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with potential visitors about this unique experience?

I hope they will feel the charm of Japan firsthand and come back again with their family and friends.

Discover the beauty of Japan through the eyes of those who live it every day. Join us for an unforgettable traditional lunch and craft experience that will leave you with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for this incredible culture.
